How to Make Melissa's Delicious Garbage Can Turkey!
Garbage Can Turkey is a unique cooking idea that produces a delicious, juicy, and tender turkey for your special event. I’ve made many Garbage Can Turkeys and my Dad made them when I was a child. Here’s what we need to make a juicy, tender, delicious, Garbage/Trash Can Turkey.
#1 A clean 10 gallon metal trash can-it’ll last longer if the seam is crimped not soldered. #2 A 2”x2” wooden stake or tree limb made to a point on one end. #3 a pair of oven mitts or long handled thongs to handle the hot food. #4 2 pairs of pliers to pick up the hot can with #5 25-30lbs of charcoal bricks #6 A roll of heavy duty aluminum foil. #7 One 14lb turkey fresh or completely thawed #8 Lighter, matches, fluid? #9 Something to scoop hot charcoal with When cooking outside, here are the steps you must take to make a Garbage/Trash Can Turkey. Step 1: At home, remove giblets from turkey, wash & pat dry, rub skin with oil and season to taste. Wrap the wing tips in foil and tie them tight to the body with string. Do not stuff! Step 2: Choose your site. When making Garbage Can Turkey remember, grass will burn. Your spot needs to be level so the can will sit tight to the ground. Step 3: When making Garbage Can Turkey, light your charcoal early so it has time to burn & turn white. This way, It'll be ready for you for step 7. Step 4: When cooking Garbage Can Turkey, spread aluminum foil on the area where you plan to set your can. This is so that when your moist, tender, delicious bird slides down or falls off the stake after cooking, it doesn’t hit the ground. Step 5: Drive your stake in the center of the foil until only 18” is left showing. Cover the stake with foil. Keep dogs away from the stake! Step 6: Put the turkey on the stake, legs down. It should not touch the ground. If it does touch, compensate by putting an aluminum foil ball under its legs and tail. Step 7: Place the garbage can upside down over the turkey. Center the bird. Do not touch the turkey with the trash can. Try to center it top to bottom as well. Some people like to put cans of beer under the garbage can for extra flavor & moister, but it’s not necessary. Make sure the can is tight to the ground all the way around it. Scoop your charcoal around the bottom about 3 high & 3 deep. Pile the rest of the charcoal on top of the can. Do not remove the garbage can until your cooking time is up! When cooking this Trash Can Turkey outside it will take 1 1/2 hours to cook. Add more charcoal if necessary. When cooking Garbage Can Turkey outdoors it’s easy to complete the meal by rubbing large potatoes with olive oil, wrapping them in foil, poking holes in them, and baking them on top of the coals on the can for about 1hour. To complete the meal you can put wet veggies, with butter and seasoning to taste, in foil and cook them for the last ½ hour on the top of the garbage can. To be safe, when making Garbage Can Turkey use a bird that has the pop out thermometer or test the thickest part of the bird for 180 degrees c. When the cooking time is up, brush the outer ring of coals away from the garbage can. Use the tongs or mitts to remove the food from the top of the trash can. Lift the garbage can with the pliers, slowly off the turkey, being careful not to touch the can. You want to keep it clean for next time. Your Garbage Can Turkey is ready to eat.
